MPSC CommissionersBIG UPDATE:

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) ruled on April 21, 2021, to include climate evidence in their review of Enbridge's proposed Line 5 oil tunnel!

This is a historic decision. The first time greenhouse gases will be included in a review under the Michigan Environmental Protection Act. We will now be able to provide evidence not only about the climate impacts of the construction of the tunnel, but also the products the pipeline carries.

Thank you to the 120 businesses and organizations and the more than 2000 people who signed our letter urging the Commissioners to include climate change.

Thanks to you and the tireless actions of thousands of others, we've won a major step in the fight to prevent an oil tunnel and fight climate change and pollution! We will continue to work with our partners at the Environmental Law & Policy Center and expert witnesses to present this evidence.

For more information, check out our press release and the video below about the Commission's decision.

Thank you and CONGRATULATIONS for helping us win this monumental decision!

Dear Commissioners:

Allowing Enbridge to build a massive oil tunnel - and to restart the Line 5 oil pipeline that Gov. Whitmer has ordered shut down - will have significant impacts on our climate and our state. Building this oil tunnel at a time when scientists say we must cut climate emissions by 45% this decade is a terrible idea, and Enbridge has been fighting to keep all evidence about climate change from even being considered. In the midst of the burgeoning climate crisis, it would be irresponsible to allow Enbridge to narrow the scope of the review of this project so severely that the most important issues are excluded. We urge you to include evidence about climate change, other significant environmental risks, and public need in your review of Enbridge’s proposed oil tunnel project.

We/all of us are in a race to save the planet from increasingly frequent disastrous weather calamities and at the same time address the water crises here and around the world. Fiscally and Environmentally responsible agencies, companies and governments globally are doing so. For the sake of a healthy peoples and our world forward looking and long range planning MUST include all climate change aspects — the downsides of promoting underwater pipelines for oil and/or gas. It is imperative that ALL of the facts and futures be considered for the sake of the health of the Great Lakes from now and into the future. Enbridge must be held to account and full disclosure addressed. The people deserve transparency and a right to demand responsible stewardship of our natural resources.

I would urge the Commissioners to think long term instead of short term in making this decision. The tunnel itself is going to be environmentally destructive and the Canadian oil that will be run through this pipeline will contribute to the climate crisis that will cause a huge catastrophe for all of the planet.

    Commissioners,

The very possibility of an oil spill in the Great Lakes is unthinkable. We are stewards of these large bodies of fresh water and the many organisms that rely on them for their existence. Our economy depends on the clean water of the Great Lakes as well. Complete protection is paramount. Enbridge cannot insure protection from an oil spill, in fact they do not have a clean record on this account to begin with. Please help protect our amazing Great Lakes.

This pipeline does nothing for Michigan. Let Canada decide if they continue to need this in their plans for energy for the future.

We need to combat climate change and save our planet and environment for future generations. Our Great Lakes are extremely important and should not be jeopardized by a pipeline

It’s time to do the right thing and protect the Great Lakes. Ask anyone in the Kalamazoo area about Embridge’s reputation for caring for the environment or the Climate Crisis. Their poor management still affects our river.
