MPSC CommissionersBIG UPDATE:

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) ruled on April 21, 2021, to include climate evidence in their review of Enbridge's proposed Line 5 oil tunnel!

This is a historic decision. The first time greenhouse gases will be included in a review under the Michigan Environmental Protection Act. We will now be able to provide evidence not only about the climate impacts of the construction of the tunnel, but also the products the pipeline carries.

Thank you to the 120 businesses and organizations and the more than 2000 people who signed our letter urging the Commissioners to include climate change.

Thanks to you and the tireless actions of thousands of others, we've won a major step in the fight to prevent an oil tunnel and fight climate change and pollution! We will continue to work with our partners at the Environmental Law & Policy Center and expert witnesses to present this evidence.

For more information, check out our press release and the video below about the Commission's decision.

Thank you and CONGRATULATIONS for helping us win this monumental decision!

Dear Commissioners:

Allowing Enbridge to build a massive oil tunnel - and to restart the Line 5 oil pipeline that Gov. Whitmer has ordered shut down - will have significant impacts on our climate and our state. Building this oil tunnel at a time when scientists say we must cut climate emissions by 45% this decade is a terrible idea, and Enbridge has been fighting to keep all evidence about climate change from even being considered. In the midst of the burgeoning climate crisis, it would be irresponsible to allow Enbridge to narrow the scope of the review of this project so severely that the most important issues are excluded. We urge you to include evidence about climate change, other significant environmental risks, and public need in your review of Enbridge’s proposed oil tunnel project.

Thank you for being there to serve the longterm needs of the state’s citizens. Now is the time to make decisions that get us off destructive energy sources and protect the Great Lakes in every way that we can. The decision on Line 5 is one of those decisions. It is not every day that a person is given a chance to move its society and country in a way that makes a huge difference for the future. This is one of those times and this is one of those decisions.

Ask the @MichiganPSC to consider the climate impacts of approving a new oil tunnel for @Enbridge Line 5. No new fossil fuel infrastructure during the #climatecrisis! #NoOilTunnel https://www.miclimateaction.org/sign_on_to_mpsc_letter?recruiter_id=46234

The MPSC carries the burden of maintaining the environmental integrity in the straits of Mackinac and the public confidence in this kind of state process. The cumulative environmental impact must be considered. Hundreds of thousands of jobs depend on maintaining the clean water status in the Great Lakes. The state agencies must make decisions about water safety, health, and the economic future of Michigan with caution as the priority. That caution and a full Environmental Impact Review will lead to denial of Enbridge tunnel permits. But that is the task before you.

A tunnel to facilitate the transport of fossil fuels which every nation is trying to phase out is irrational at best. Short term gain would come at projected long term loss too great to measure. Let’s not contribute to another environmental mistake. Surely we humans are not that stupid.

We have to move beyond the old and toward some new thinking and new ideas.

I am frankly outraged that the idea of a tunnel is even being discussed. How could you live with the impacts of the eventual spill and leak? It is shocking to me that anyone would risk the water of our treasured Great Lakes for some Canadians fuel needs. I implore you to deny any of Enbridge’s request. No pipeline, no tunnel!!
