No More Dangerous, Unstudied Gambles with Our Great Lakes

Every day, Michigan’s communities, climate, and the Great Lakes, our most vital natural resource, are put at risk by Enbridge’s aging Line 5 pipeline and a proposed oil tunnel that has never undergone a full, independent review.

Now, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has fast-tracked a permit for this tunnel under a questionable “energy emergency” order, bypassing the thorough scrutiny that this dangerous project demands.

Instead of protecting our water, ecosystems, and climate, the tunnel would deepen our dependence on fossil fuels at a time when we must urgently transition to clean energy. It’s a false solution that puts everything we value at risk.

We must insist on a transparent, comprehensive review of this project. The time to act is now. Let’s protect our future by calling for the decommissioning of Line 5 and demanding a future rooted in justice and care for our communities and environment.

My name is _____, and I’m calling today to urge Governor Whitmer to protect our water by directing the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to deny the permit for Enbridge’s proposed Line 5 tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac.

The Line 5 pipeline is an imminent threat, and building a tunnel to house it is no solution. Construction would destroy wetlands, disrupt aquatic habitats, and perpetuate our reliance on fossil fuels during a critical time for climate action. Worse, the tunnel poses risks of explosion from natural gas liquids, shifting financial liability to Michigan taxpayers for 100 years.

I urge Governor Whitmer to ensure that Michigan prioritizes water quality, ecosystem health, and a sustainable future by rejecting Enbridge’s tunnel scheme.
