Session Description
Take yourself on a complimentary self-guided tour of the Baker Woodlot! Explore the Baker Woodlot, a beautiful forest with many very large, old trees. The Woodlot has exceptional carbon stocks around 479 tCO2e per acre (233tCO2e tree biomass above ground, 56 tCO2e tree roots, 190 tCO2e soil organic matter). A typical forest in Michigan only has 304 tCO2e per acre (~100 tCO2e in tree biomass and ~200 tCO2e in soils).
Baker Woodlot was enrolled in the OId Growth Forest Network in 2023 because of its old growth characteristics – a diversity of tree sizes, including many large trees, a diversity of tree species, and
variation in canopy structure. Baker Woodlot was actively harvested by MSU’s Department of Forestry using single tree selection into the 1970’s. That sustainable management accelerated the formation of
the old growth characteristics that we see today.
Take the tour at your leisure and discover how the beautiful and mighty woodlot fights climate change.
