On October 3rd, Governor Snyder announced that the Enbridge Line 5 Tunnel, would be housed under the Mackinac Bridge Authority. Not only were the Mackinac Bridge Authority not consulted on the Utility Tunnel, but the tunnel is not under their jurisdiction. Every Wednesday, we are asking for people to call the Mackinac Bridge Authority and ask them to Stop Snyder's Tunnel.
Talking Points:
~For over 70 years, the Mackinac Bridge Authority has maintained and operated one the hallmark symbols of our state, the Mackinac Bridge. I strongly urge you to reject Governor Snyder’s disastrous proposal to use the Mackinac Bridge Authority as a means to circumvent environmental review of building an oil tunnel through the Straits of Mackinac. This proposal would allow Enbridge to continue to operate the dilapidated Line 5 pipeline in its current form for the next decade while an oil tunnel is built, and would handcuff Michigan to being a shortcut for Canadian oil for the foreseeable future.
~The Mackinac Bridge Authority must stand up for our Great Lakes and reject any involvement in this proposal. Please think of the future generations of Michiganders who deserve our best efforts to protect the waters that literally define our state, and don’t allow the Governor to play politics with the Mackinac Bridge Authority.
~A Tunnel will expose Michigan to Tar Sands Oil.
~The current damaged and dangerous Line 5 pipeline will still be used for 6-7 estimated years during construction of the Tunnel.
~A Canadian tunnel under the Straits is not permissible under Michigan’s Great Lakes Submerged Lands Act (GLSLA), common law public trust doctrine, and would risk violating the 1836 Treaty and consent decree with Michigan Tribes protecting the Straits fishing grounds.
~The people of Michigan oppose Line 5.
~Could trigger NAFTA claims.
~Promote Climate Change.
