The state needs to hear from people that support clean energy and climate action!

Thanks to the tireless work of Michigan’s clean energy advocates, in December the legislature passed laws that take important steps toward more clean, renewable energy. But the devil is in the details, and the state is deciding those details right now - and for a short time is asking for public input.

The fossil fuel industry and big utilities are making sure their voices are heard, and are trying to slow the transition to renewables. The state needs to hear from all of us who want clean air and water, a stable climate, and to bring green jobs to our state.

This is an important opportunity to take climate action and fight for clean energy. Join us in making your voice heard by signing onto our public comment letter below.

To Michigan Public Service Commissioners:

I am writing to make official public comment on the Draft Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) Parameters (Case No. U-18418).

The implementation of the energy law passed last year (PA 341) will determine Michigan’s energy future for years to come. We urge you to protect our health and promote a stable climate by making the IRP process as strong as possible and require electric utility companies to:

  • Expand energy efficiency and increase clean, renewable energy to save ratepayers money and reduce pollution.
  • Consider health and environmental implications in their energy plans and allow opportunities for public engagement.
  • Create strong net metering programs to make sure people who install rooftop solar get a fair price for the clean energy they generate.
  • Structure the green energy program fairly so that cities and other customers can get more of their electricity from clean energy at a competitive price that reflects the actual cost of clean energy.
  • Set up strong electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and incentives to encourage a rapid transition to EVs.

More Details

A key piece of this new law is that now every electric utility company must file an Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), a long-term plan that includes energy efficiency, electric generation, net metering and other programs they will offer customers, and how much new generation will cost ratepayers. Read more about why this planning matters. The State just issued a draft IRP proposal and is now taking public comment until October 6.

While there are technical details to be figured out, the State also needs to hear from people that we want a rapid transition to clean energy to reduce pollution, improve health, save lives, and preserve a stable climate. If done right, it also will rein in rising electricity costs, saving families thousands of dollars in energy and health care costs each year, and create thousands of new jobs.

I have been watching the climate change models since the 1970’s. We already have placed our future in a precarious position due to climate change. We MUST make a concerted effort to quickly switch to renewables. We cannot stop the change from happening, as it already is taking its toll, but we can slow it down and in a far future reverse it. Otherwise, my great nieces and nephews will not even live out a full life. It is that bad. We are stupid and self-destructive if we do not take all the possible actions we can.
