With the announcement that Pres. Trump will pull the United States out of the Paris Climate Agreement, we cannot sit silently by without taking action. It's now time to take stronger action here in Michigan.

Dear Governor Snyder and Michigan Members of Congress,

Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of the historic Paris Climate Agreement is a major setback in a U.S. transition to clean energy and our position as a global leader. Now more than ever, we urge you to stand up to President Trump’s misguided actions and be a climate leader by taking climate action.

The historic Paris Climate Agreement among nearly 200 nations commits each country to keep warming below 2 degrees Celsius, which is what scientists have determined is necessary to avoid the worst consequences and to maintain a stable climate.

The citizens of Michigan know that climate change is one of the most urgent issues of our time and that it affects everything – our health, our jobs, the future of our children, and Michigan’s natural environment. We need you to stand up for Michigan and speak out against Donald Trump’s reckless attacks on our future.

Also, now that it is so clear that our national leadership is backtracking our progress on climate, we look to you, our state and Congressional leaders, to do more to lead us towards a clean energy future. We urge you to enact stronger renewable energy policies, clean car standards, to put a price on carbon, and enact policies that create an environment where companies can thrive while transitioning us to lower carbon resources.

We urge you to stand up to President Trump’s harmful climate actions, become a climate leader, and do what is right for all Michiganders. We are living in a time where inaction on climate and remaining silent is unacceptable.

Meanwhile I will live my life in a manner to support the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and I believe that there are many individuals who will do the same. Citizens will need to take on the responsibilities for the inaction of governments in caring for the health and general welfare of people and our environment.

What the President has done is hugely damaging to the US economy and to our environment. Shame on him! We must show the world that we will locally and statewide fight this egregious decision. What a shame and we should be ashamed that Trump is our President. It is on our shoulders to speak out and make sure that the democratic foundation of our country is preserved. If we don’t stand up how do we face the world that the values of the foundation of our country are being upheld.

We have never been more determined to stand up and speak out – and we are grandparents, in our 60’s, and have a history of being proud patriots who demonstrate for what is true and good – liberty and justice for all. That means a clean and healthy planet for our grandchildren – so far, we have 5. As lifelong Michigan residents, you can count on us to vote and promote our beliefs. And we believe Mr. Trump and his Russian buddies have no business running our country. This is no joke and Climate Change is a real threat to our civilization as it stands now. With the threat of drought, flooding, fires and a whole myriad of dangers associated with earths rising temperatures it’s time for each state to act and stand with the rest of the civilized world and become part of the Paris Accord. We must do everything we can to stem the tide of disaster waiting in the wings. Washington is totally out of their minds and it’s now up to the individual states and cities to step in and take up the slack. Let’s make Michigan a state we’d be proud to live in because we know that our state government is doing the right thing for the people and the planet.
