During this Community Conversation, MiCAN and the West Michigan Environmental Action Council will discuss the environmental and economic risks posed by Line 5 and explore alternative solutions for transporting oil and gas that do not jeopardize our Great Lakes. Our knowledgeable speakers, Erica Bouldin, MICAN’s Line 5 Educator, and Marshall Kilgore, WMEAC’s Director of Engagement, will provide valuable insights and facilitate an open and inclusive discussion.

Line 5 is a 645-mile oil pipeline that transports 22 million gallons of crude oil and natural gas liquids every day from western Canada to Eastern Canada through the Great Lakes. However, this pipeline is currently in a state of significant deterioration, posing a catastrophic risk to the precious freshwater resource that is the Great Lakes. 

The Great Lakes are not only a vital source of drinking water for millions of people, but they also support a diverse ecosystem and provide countless recreational opportunities. The potential for an oil spill from Line 5 threatens not only the lakes themselves but also the 400 rivers, streams, wetlands, farmland, and tribal lands that rely on them.
